» Kojima interacts with MGS4 to prove video is real-time
Article posted by XanTium | 17-9-2005 19:04 | Permalink | Digg News

From joystiq.com:
[QUOTE]
Hideo Kojima made a guest appearance at Konami's booth at TGS today to interact in real-time with Solid Snake's character model from the Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer via a PS3 test system (apparently on-stage looking "like a slightly oversized PC").
This demonstration from Kojima shows us that the scenes from the vaunted TGS trailer can run in real-time.

» TGS 2005: PS3 not playable - Games lineup revealed: 102 games
Article posted by XanTium | 17-9-2005 0:28 | Permalink | Digg News

From gamespot.com:
[QUOTE]
One of the biggest, and most unfortunate, surprises at the Tokyo Game Show 2005 so far has been the absence of any playable PlayStation 3 games. However, that didn't totally deflate the spirits of those present, as Sony Computer Entertainment released its full lineup of Japanese PS3 games at the show. The list revealed a massive amount of third-party support for the console, which is sure to heat up the next-generation console war with Microsoft's Xbox 360. Sony currently has 102 games scheduled or already in development for the PS3, with 71 publishers on board its next-gen bandwagon.

One thing striking, if not terribly surprising, about the PS3 lineup is the massive amount of sequels it contains.
Surprisingly, not many companies announced games for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 at the Tokyo Game Show.

» IBM eyes more mkts for 'cell' chip
Article posted by XanTium | 16-9-2005 18:58 | Permalink | Digg News

From Reuters.com:
[QUOTE]
Two years ago, analysts were calling on IBM to exit the microchip business after production problems and lower-than-expected orders led to losses of more than $1 billion since 2002 at the division.

Today IBM sees a profitable future in microprocessors as it finds new markets for its "Cell" chip, found in Sony Corp. PlayStations, Toshiba TVs, and other devices and computers.
Besides gaming, the high-powered Cell, which IBM calls a "supercomputer on a chip," is seen powering devices in a range of industries including medical, aerospace and automotive technologies. Analysts expect Sony to sell 80 million to 100 million PlayStation 3 video consoles by 2010.

In the first deal for the Cell chip beyond consumer electronics, International Business Machines Corp. in June agreed to license the processor to military equipment maker Mercury Computer Systems Inc. The chip could power magnetic resonance imaging scanners in medicine and missile systems and sonar for military uses. Other potential applications include heart pacemakers and weather forecasting, Doherty said.

» TGS 2005: PS3 controller still not final
Article posted by XanTium | 16-9-2005 14:57 | Permalink | Digg News

From gamespot.com:
[QUOTE]
While the months since E3 have led to much discussion about the controller's design, Sony apparently isn't ready to set the boomerang design down in stone as the final controller for its upcoming console. Right next to the display controller at TGS 2005 is a small sign that reads, "conceptual design."

» TGS 2005: PlayStation 3 Booth Report
Article posted by XanTium | 16-9-2005 1:13 | Permalink | Digg News

Report by 1up.com from Sony's booth at the Tokyo Game Show that opened today:
[QUOTE]
Half of Sony's booth this year -- the same half that was dedicated to PSP last year -- was constructed as a massive theater to show off the PlayStation 3. Nothing was playable, unfortunately, but PS3 videos both new and old were shown on what was undoubtedly the sharpest video wall anyone's ever seen.

The new games shown: Metal Gear Solid 4, Project Assassins, Armored Core 4, Pawa Puru Next, Lair and Genji.
Outside of those titles that we hadn't seen before, Sony also showed trailers that we'd previously seen from Microsoft for the Xbox 360: Resident Evil 5 and Sonic the Hedgehog.
Then there were a bunch of other PS3 videos from E3: The Getaway, Killzone, F1 Racer, the Final Fantasy VII tech demo, Gran Turismo, MotorStorm, Tekken, and Gundam.

» Advent Children Director Wants To Redo FFVII
Article posted by XanTium | 15-9-2005 19:54 | Permalink | Digg News

1up.com has an interview with director Tetsuya Nomura, one of the men behind the Advent Children movie and Kingdom Hearts. He now talks about a possible Final Fantasy VII remake on the PS3:
[QUOTE]
For the first time ever, Nomura admitted freely that, should he find the time once all of his current projects are completed, he would like to take the mouth-watering Final Fantasy VII tech demo for PlayStation 3 and turn it into the complete remake for which fans of the original have been clamoring for years.

1UP: OK. My last question is, the FF7 tech demo for PS3 is very provocative. And there are only probably about 15 million people out there who would like to see it become a game. Is he as interested in seeing an FF7 remake as everyone else is?
Tetsuya Nomura [through translator]: The PS3 tech demo was actually not the perfect forum that he wanted to have. It was just timing that we had to submit something in time for E3, for the press conference. So, again, it was not perfect forum. And the 7 remake idea was always, always in conversation, just because it's so popular. And then just because of that tech demo here in the PS3 conference, that probably based more expectations of fans, obviously. And Kitase-san already has told Nomura-san so many times that if there is a remake, that should be created by Nomura. But, again, Nomura-san has so many other projects lined up already in the future schedule, so it's almost impossible to think about that and squeeze that in. But if there is a right time, it would be interesting to create.

Article posted by XanTium | 14-9-2005 0:01 | Permalink | Digg News

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
Magazine publisher IDG has released its annual 'industry white paper' data on spending habits of U.S gamers.

The report says active gamers can be segmented into three categories: devoted, social and casual gamers. Devoted gamers, who count game-playing as their primary activity, make up 41% of the total gaming audience and are responsible for 52% of the dollars spent on video games and systems.
Social gamers represent 35% of spending while casual gamers represent 28% of the gaming audience but only 13% of dollars spent.

The report says devoted gamers will drive sales of new systems in 2005 and 2006 with more than half of them likely to buy a PlayStation 3 and over 45% planning to buy Xbox 360 within the first year of release for each system.

» Sony issues recall for overheating PS2 AC Adaptors
Article posted by XanTium | 13-9-2005 9:33 | Permalink | Digg News

From the pressrelease:
[QUOTE]
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced a voluntary recall of certain AC Adaptors supplied with the black slimline PlayStation 2.
Certain AC Adaptors, identified as manufactured between August 2004 and December 2004, and supplied with the black slimline PlayStation 2 models SCPH70002, 70003 and 70004 may overheat and cause an injury hazard to consumers. It is likely that some of these units may have been on sale after this date. No other PlayStation 2 units are affected.

As a precautionary measure, and to ensure the quality and safety of PlayStation products for consumers, SCEE has taken the decision to recall all affected AC Adaptors in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia.
Consumers who identify their AC Adaptor from the diagram below as one of those affected, should arrange for a replacement by visiting:

» PlayStation 3: Release Date, CES showing, Online Plans, ...
Article posted by XanTium | 13-9-2005 0:03 | Permalink | Digg News

From Spong.com
[QUOTE]
Glossy American publication PSM has made some bold claims about Sony's plans for the PlayStation 3, which we'll summarise below:

* According to an unnamed source quoted by the mag, PlayStation 3 is actually really easy to develop for, far easier than the Xbox 360. "Both are friendly, but the PS3 may actually be friendlier. People are finding that the [Xbox] 360 has some stupid bottlenecks." This is, well, completely opposite to everything we have heard to date. Still, you never know...

* Sony is also planning to make an Xbox Live-rivalling online community, according to PSM. "They [Sony] have a whole division that was put in place after the Network Adaptor was released for PS2 that basically dropped focus on PS2 and moved to planning the PS3," another unnamed insider told the magazine. "They knew that early that they were not going to compete during the current generation."

* Perhaps the most interesting assertion made in the article is that the PlayStation 3 will be released in all territories within the next nine months or so. "Questioned further on the topic, Sony execs have since stuck to their guns, saying that the system would be available worldwide before next summer," it says...

* The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has been pencilled in for the PlayStation 3's coming out party, with several first and third-party games promised by PSM. Electronic Arts is said to have the biggest non-SCE presence.

» Japan: 72% Next Gen Consumers Want PlayStation 3
Article posted by XanTium | 12-9-2005 20:46 | Permalink | Digg News

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
The survey, published by Nikkei, revealed that 70% of relevant consumers are "interested in buying PlayStation 3". It also found that 65% of the target audience are excited about next generation consoles and games, compared with just 30% a year ago.
Of those consumers who plan to buy a console, 72% are opting for PlayStation 3, 22% for Nintendo Revolution and 6% for Xbox 360. However, it's not all bad news for Microsoft. A similar survey in July found that only 2% of consumers were interested in its machine.

» Sony expects Blu-Ray victory within 12 months
Article posted by XanTium | 12-9-2005 20:40 | Permalink | Digg News

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Speaking to HomeMediaRetailing.com, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Benjamin Feingold fingered the PlayStation 3, which will sport a Blu-Ray drive, as a major factor that will drive the adoption of the standard.
"I think in 12 months it's going to be clear," he predicted. "The combination of Blu-Ray and PlayStation 3 machines is going to overwhelm any HD-DVD presence and all studios will have to support Blu-Ray."
