» Hirai: I Think About PS3 Pricing Everyday
Article posted by XanTium | 21-9-2007 21:24 | Permalink | Digg News

From biz.gamedaily.com:
[QUOTE]
Sony Computer Entertainment's chief executive Kaz Hirai has acknowledged that the PS3's pricing situation is such an important factor that he thinks about it daily. That said, he didn't announce a price drop at TGS, a move that left analyst Michael Pachter confused.

Pachter told GameDaily BIZ that he's a bit perplexed by Sony's non-action on the pricing front.
"I'm really not sure what they're thinking," he commented. "Hirai said no cut this year when asked the direct question, so I think the PS3 cut is unlikely until Spring. It now looks like the delay of Home and the lack of any killer games this year made them reconsider whether a price cut in 2007 would have much impact."
Pachter added, "I would not rule out a PS2 price cut, but it looks like we can put the PS3 cut to bed until some time early next year."

In a separate interview with the Financial Times, Hirai seemingly backed up Pachter's comments about the impact a price cut would have if they didn't have enough AAA software to back it up.
"Going aggressive only on price without being able to back it up with content doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me," he said. Hirai added that a price cut would have a "real impact" on hardware sales only if Sony also provided enough software titles to support the PS3.

» It is a last gen feature - DualShock 3 same tech as DualShock 2
Article posted by XanTium | 21-9-2007 21:21 | Permalink | Digg News

From joystiq.com:
[QUOTE]
GameDaily BIZ confirmed with Sony today that the technology in the recently announced DualShock 3 is identical to that in the DualShock 2. So anybody expecting Immersion's next-gen rumble technology can just let those dreams pass into the ether.

As for battery life, the DualShock 3 will last approximately 15 hours with the rumble feature on, and 30 hours (the same as the Sixaxis) with it off.

» Microsoft: Home delay is 'disappointing'
Article posted by XanTium | 21-9-2007 11:49 | Permalink | Digg News

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft's Neil Thompson has told GamesIndustry.biz in an exclusive interview that he feels Sony's delay to the Home project is down to the company underestimating the challenges of the platform.

"Well, what they announce at TGS and what they decide to do in any given market in time are not necessarily directly aligned, I think. But Sony will be doing things between now and Christmas I'm sure, they can't afford not to really, given the way that that particular business is going for them at the moment."

"But I think one of the disappointing/interesting things I heard from them at the Tokyo Game Show was that they just delayed the [Home] online service delivery again. That's more interesting, because I think they underestimated how challenging it is to deliver this sort of service, and to deliver the elements of the service that consumers really want."

From developmag.com:
[QUOTE]
In his keynote at the Tokyo Game Show 2007, Sony Computer Entertainment head Kaz Hirai has outlined plans to provide better support for developers grappling with the PS3 system.

First of the new plans is to share assets and know-how built up within Sony Worldwide Studios, recently bolstered with the addition of Evolution and BigBig Studios. Sony also plans to increase efficiency in development by putting in place new strategies and sharing the SN Systems tool chain, obtained through Sony's purchase of SN Systems in 2005.

The platform holder will also be seeking input from publishers by setting up an advisory board to meet on a regular basis.

[QUOTE]
As has been widely anticipated, Sony has failed to confirm a PlayStation 3 price cut for 2007 during its Tokyo Game Show keynote speech this morning, with worldwide boss Kaz Hirai saying only that such a move is a "possibility" for the future.

There will be "no surprise in this regard this year," said Hirai, referring to last year's TGS PS3 price announcement.

» TGS 2007: Sony announces latest PlayStation sales figures
Article posted by XanTium | 19-9-2007 23:37 | Permalink | Digg News

From psu.com:
[QUOTE]
According to Kaz, PS3 has sold in between 5 and 6 million units, leaning slightly towards the 5 million end.

Expectations are high for the holidays however - Sony expects to reach 11 million PS3's by the end of the year. We reckon reaching that goal without a price cut will be a challenge and perhaps even miracle.

The Dual Shock 3 will launch this November in Japan, while the US and Europe will receive the new controller in the spring of 2008.

» Sony Denies Plans to Sell Chip Operations
Article posted by XanTium | 18-9-2007 19:55 | Permalink | Digg News

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
Sony has denied media reports claiming it is preparing to sell off its Cell microprocessor and advanced chip production facilities to Toshiba.

According to the Associated Press, Japanese business daily Nikkei said Saturday that Sony was planning to shed costly semiconductor assets in a deal that could be worth about 100 billion yen ($870 million).

However, Sony spokesperson Tomio Takizawa said Tuesday that "nothing has been concretely decided." He refused to say whether Sony was in talks with Toshiba concerning a sale, although he did acknowledge that the firm has been exploring ways to streamline its chip-making business.

» Sony's IPO scaled back
Article posted by XanTium | 18-9-2007 19:50 | Permalink | Digg News

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Following earlier estimates that Sony would sell shares in its Financial Holdings company at JPY 415,000, it has now been confirmed that the actual price will be up to eight per cent lower than initial expectations.

This is because, according to a report on Bloomberg, the global market uncertainty sparked by the US subprime mortgage issue has caused a "rout in Japanese financial stocks that erased JPY 1.5 trillion from the nation's three largest banks."

Sony will now look to raise around JPY 300 billion (USD 2.6 billion) by selling 34.5 per cent of the company, rather than the originally hoped-for JPY 332 billion (2.9 billion), which it is predicted the company may assign to the consumer electronics and gaming divisions.

» GameSpot Rumor Control: Dual Shock 3 Rumor is Not Bogus
Article posted by XanTium | 17-9-2007 18:37 | Permalink | Digg News

From gamespot.com:
[QUOTE]
Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that a rumble-enabled Dual Shock 3 is coming. GameSpot has learned from a source close to Sony that the company is definitely working on a force-feedback-equipped controller for release in the "coming months." However, as of press time, Sony higher-ups were still apparently debating whether or not to unveil the device at TGS--though a less appropriate venue doesn't spring to mind. It was also unclear if the Dual Shock 3 would have the Sixaxis' tilt-sensing technology, or whether the functionality had been abandoned altogether.
