» Sony CEO: 200usd Blu-ray Players Coming
From gizmodo.com:
Everybody clamoring for a cheap Blu-ray player now that the format war is over might wanna bide their time with a sweet DVD upconverter--the $200-player Blu-ray cavalry is at least a year away, according to Sony Electronics CEO Stan Glasgow, who we talked to today in New York. "I don't think $200 is going to happen this year. Next year $200 could happen. We'll be at a $300 rate this year. $299 will happen this year."
No cheap Chinese-made players will be flooding the market to push it down either, not until the BDA decides to license the tech to them, and Glasgow implied it's gonna be a while before that happens. Anyone else wants a license? Sure. But not them, in part it was indicated, because of piracy concerns. Not that the price matters too much right now, since Sony is "struggling to keep up with the demand."
The mighty morphin' PS3 SKU--from 60GB to 40GB, backward-compatible or not--isn't going to stop shape-shifting. When asked "Will there also be another PlayStation with Blu-ray built-in? Glasgow answered that "there's going to be continual evolvement in the PlayStation line" before talking about feature upgrades with software.
» PS3's in-game comms extended
From techradar.com:
In-game communications between players on the PS3 is to be extended and improved this summer, according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe managing director Ray Maguire.
At a recent trade event, Maguire said: "Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios."
TechRadar spoke with Daniel Dawkins, editor of PSM3 Magazine, this morning who told us: "This brings the PS3 up to parity with Xbox Live, the key difference being that it's free". Dawkins added: "Sony is working its best to respond to what gamers want. The amount of evolution in terms of the firmware updates over the last year has been phenomenal."
» US Air Force Wants To Buy 300 PS3s For Cell 'Assessment'
From kotaku.com:
Ripped from tomorrow's press releases comes word that the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory has submitted a purchase request for a bunch of PlayStation 3s--three hundred of the 40GB model, to be exact. They're not (officially) intended for playing Grand Theft Auto IV or training pilots under the harsh control conditions of Lair, mind you, but for "conducting a technology assessment of certain cell processors." Uh huh.
» It's Official: Phil Harrison New Atari President
From wired.com:
The rumor mill got it right: Phil Harrison, former president of Sony's game development studios, has joined the parent company of ailing game publisher Atari to focus on the development of online gaming.
Infogrames, owner of the Atari brand, announced today that Harrison has been appointed President and "Directeur Général Délégué" of the Lyon, France-based company.
In a statement today, Infogrames said that Harrison, one of the founding members of the PlayStation team at Sony, will "grow the Atari brand into a leading online game company." His duties will be similar to his last position within Sony: Overseeing game development studios both internal and external while "attracting world-class design and development talent" to Atari.
As such, the appointment of Harrison represents an interesting turnaround to Atari's stance on game development. In November, after selling off the franchise rights to most of its game properties, Atari announced that it would leave the game-design business and concentrate entirely on publishing and distribution. Now it seems as if Harrison will build their portfolio back up -- but with a focus on online, community-based games.
» Kojima: MGS4 too big for 50 GB Blu-ray disc
From joystiq.com:
It's not much of a shocker to learn the latest (and final) installment in the Metal Gear Solid series is a sizable one -- MGS games have a history of being big (and beautiful). However, a recent interview with series creator Hideo Kojima revealed a startling fact about MGS4 -- Kojima complained that a few features had to be cut from the game so it would fit on a Blu-ray disc. As format fanatics already know, that means the game takes up nearly 50 gigabytes of space.
