» Analyst: PS3 a Crutch to the Blu-ray Market
From next-gen.biz:
Just as some game makers might worry that people are buying PS3s just for Blu-ray movies, movie studios may need to worry that that people are buying the consoles just for games, according to one analyst.
"The studios better hope that people are playing movies on their PlayStations," said ABI Research analyst Steve Wilson. "Otherwise there's very little installed base."
The comments come from an abstract of ABI Research's new study, "Consumer Video Technologies Forecasts," which found that "the state of the Blu-ray player market is not all that encouraging," because of the market's reliance on the Blu-ray-enabled PS3.
"In 2008 about 85 percent of the Blu-ray players in the market will be found in PS3s; the dedicated consumer electronics and PC-based types of Blu-ray players won't catch up in terms of market share until about 2013," Wilson added.
» Sony to launch online video service for PlayStation 3
From latimes.com:
The entertainment and electronics giant is preparing to launch an online video service through its game console PlayStation 3 as early as this summer, studio executives familiar with the plan say.
The company has been in licensing talks with studios in recent weeks, according to these executives, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of continuing negotiations.
The initial version of the service would include movies and television shows flowing from the Internet to the PlayStation 3.
Sony is trying to capitalize on its Trojan horse in the living room, the PlayStation 3. The console is already connected to the TV and the Internet, and has sold more than 4 million units in the U.S. and 9 million worldwide, according to Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles. The console gave Sony the decisive edge in the battle to establish its Blu-ray discs as the standard for high-definition video in the home, trumping the HD DVD format backed by Toshiba Corp., Microsoft Corp. and others.
The new service would position Sony to compete with the growing number of Internet-connected devices and services that deliver video to the TV, including AppleTV, Vudu and Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.
» PS3 to get smaller Cell and/or RSX chips in August?
From engadget.com:
Nikko Citigroup upgraded its rating on Sony this morning in anticipation of it breaking even on PS3 costs earlier than expected. At the moment, Sony sells the PS3 at a loss. The respected group of analysts is now earmarking August as the milestone month. Sony's CFO recently suggested that the move would occur in the second half of the year -- a date analysts then pegged at November. No details behind the new upbeat expectations were provided by Nikko CG. However, it's safe to assume that the PS3's break-even event will be realized by a switch to a sub-65nm cell processor, sub-90nm RSX graphics chip, or both, since the smaller chips are less-costly to manufacturer.
