» Japanese analysts weigh in on next-generation consoles
From gamespot.com:
Daiwa Institute of Research senior analyst Eiji Maeda predicts the PlayStation 3 will be released in Japan between April and June, but the console will not have much of a third-party lineup until summer or fall. Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Jay Defibaugh (who's currently working in Credit Suisse's Tokyo branch) predicts a similar release period for the PS3, sometime between May and June.
While Sony still has its PS3 launch set for spring, the analysts predict that the console will come out a bit later since the console's games are behind in development. The PS3 is reportedly difficult to develop for, and while there are 71 developers currently working on 102 games, only eight titles have been announced for release in 2006, with just two slated for spring.
Daiwa's Maeda predicts the PS3 is likely to hold the top share in the next-generation console war, but he cites the lack of launch titles as one of the factors that may affect its sales in 2006. Maeda also says the PS3's Blu-ray drive isn't as strong a sales point as the PlayStation 2's DVD drive. Back in 2000, consumers were drawn to the PS2 because it was also a DVD player, eliminating the need to buy a then-expensive stand-alone player. Another point cited by Maeda is the system's price. Maeda predicts that the PS3 will be priced in the 40,000 yen range ($343) at the lowest, while Nintendo's Revolution will be 30,000 yen ($257) at its highest. He also believes that by the time the PS3 comes out, Microsoft will likely have dropped its price on the Xbox 360.
» The Art of PS3 Programming
games.slashdot.org
The Guardian Gamesblog has a longish piece talking with Volatile Games, developers of the title Possession for the PS3, about what it's like to make a game for Sony's next-gen console. From the article: "At the end of the day it's just a multi-processor architecture. If you can get something running on eight threads of a PC CPU, you can get it running on eight processors on a PS3 - it's not massively different. There is a small 'gotcha' in there though. The main processor can access all the machine's video memory, but each of the seven SPE chips has access only to its own 256k of onboard memory - so if you have, say, a big mesh to process, it'll be necessary to stream it through a small amount of memory - you'd have to DMA it up to your cell chip and then process a little chunk, then DMA the next chunk, so you won't be able to jump around the memory as easily, which I guess you will be able to do on the Xbox 360." » Kynogon Joins PlayStation 3 Tools and Middleware Program
From gamasutra.com:
Kynogon has announced Kynapse support for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s Tools & Middleware program for PlayStation 3. Game developers for PlayStation 3 will be able to access all Kynapse functionalities and tools to create non-player characters with advanced behavior.
Kynapse 4.0, which will support the PlayStation 3, introduces technology called "Large scale A.I." The new technology is meant to address specific AI needs, such as existing algorithms limitations when dealing with large, detailed, terrains and huge numbers of NPCs; handling megabytes of AI data at runtime; getting NPCs to understand their environment topographically, and how to take advantage of the PS3 architecture. » Sony's Real War Begins
From next-gen.biz:
Rumor is that an announcement is due some time in the next eight weeks. Of course, a rumor in the game industry carries about as much value as an Albanian supermarket voucher. Next Generation merely reports the existence of the rumor; we're in no hurry to win Gamespot's dreaded 'Bogus' rating in its excellent Rumor report. But we will take the opportunity to ponder this puzzler; what the hell is Sony up to? Let's speculate.
...
The theory goes that Sony's play is not for the next generation games market at all. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is no more than an irritating diversion. The big play is for the high definition DVD market, and in this context, an early launch, with small hardware numbers and threadbare games software support might just be a good move. This play potentially represents Sony's most important move in its entire history. Imagine; a royalty for Sony on every single DVD sold between 2006 and 2012 or thereabouts. No wonder Bill Gates hates Blu-ray.
» Futher PS3 and Revolution Pricing Speculation
From kotaku.com:
As far as Japanese product magazines go, Trendy is really one of the best. They've been covering domestic consumer goods for approximately two decades and are a good barometer for what's happening in the marketplace. So when they mentioned pricing estimates for the PlayStation 3 and the Revolution, I sit up, take notice and post it on Kotaku. Trendy's ballpark forecast for the PS3 is from 40,000 yen (~350usd or ~285eur) (not 50,000 yen), and they think the Revolution will bank for around 20,000 yen (~175usd or ~145eur). Educated guesstimate, or do they know something we don't?
