» Blu-Ray Attacks Microsoft, Microsoft Bites Back
From slashdot.org:
"Ars Technica has been following this week's next-gen DVD dramas closely. First, there's extensive coverage of the reasons why Microsoft backed HD-DVD, which was primarily inspired by mandatory support for copying discs to computers. The BDA, however, countered with an attack on Microsoft's reasons, and Microsoft returned fire. Richard E. Doherty, Microsoft's head of the media entertainment technology convergence group, said that 50GB Blu-ray disc are in fact many years away. Is MS playing games, or is Sony misrepresenting just how far along BD-ROM really is?" From the article: "HD DVD is proven to deliver 30GB capacity today, with the potential to deliver even greater capacity. The 50GB claim for BD-ROM discs is unproven and will not be available for many years to come, based on discussions with major Japanese and US replicators. Replicators not only do not have test lines running, they cannot even pre-order the equipment to begin evaluating this disc. They cannot judge the cost of these discs, or even whether they can be manufactured at all. Major replicators can mass manufacture 30GB HD DVD discs today and it's well understood that these discs will cost significantly less to manufacture than the lower-capacity 25GB BD discs."
» Emmy for Sony PlayStation 3D work
From bbc.co.uk:
Sony's PlayStation console has won an Emmy from the US National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). The console was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement in Technology and Advanced New Media award for its early work on 3D polygon-based gaming.
Ken Kutaragi, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said the award was an honour and added that the consoles' success had exceeded his "wildest expectations". "When the concept for PlayStation was in its infancy in the early 1990s, we had a dream to elevate the quality of computer graphics from a 2D-based environment to a rich, realistic 3D experience," he said. "At the same time, we intended to bring in a new form of entertainment through the living room in a manner that would allow people all over the world to enjoy the pleasures of interactive entertainment." » Masatsuka Saeki tells us why system wasn't playable at Tokyo Game Show.
From ps3.ign.com:
Japan's Weekly Famitsu asked Sony Computer Entertainment Corporate Executive Masatsuka Saeki why the PS3 wasn't playable at TGS in an interview featured in its latest issue. Apparently, Sony could have shown playable software, but it decided that since this was the first time the PS3 was going to be shown on Japanese soil, it would be best to show only video footage first. Pressed further by the magazine, Saeki states that SCE wanted general users to feel the same impact that industry members felt upon seeing the E3 trailer footage for the system, and thus opted for trailer footage only , even though Saeki admits that being able to play the games would have caused a greater buzz.
With the system having missed out on its playable debut at TGS, you might be wondering when gamers will get a chance for a first hands-on test. Originally, SCE was scheduled to hold a Japanese event in February that would give players a chance to play PS3 games, but Saeki reveals that SCE now has something else planned in place of this event -- something that will surprise gamers but is currently being kept a secret. » Sony President: Management Team Is United
From forbes.com:
Sony Corp. President Ryoji Chubachi said Tuesday there was no division in the company's management team, despite CEO Howard Stringer's recent remarks indicating he met resistance in trying to cut more jobs than the 10,000 layoffs planned. "There are no contradictions or conflict. I can say with confidence we stand together," Chubachi, who also heads Sony Corp.'s electronics division and is chief operating officer, told reporters at the company's headquarters here.
On Monday, Moody's Investors Service put Sony's ratings on review for a possible downgrade, citing doubts about the new strategy. Other analysts have also criticized it as sounding much like other plans to streamline corporate structure. But Chubachi said Sony will answer skeptics with gadgets that offer brilliant image quality tailor-made for the digital home, although he refused to give details. Sony is promising to focus on "champion products" with growth potential, such as the PlayStation 3 next-generation game console, Bravia liquid crystal display televisions and Walkman MP3 music players. » Sony Advances PS3 Development
From ps3.ign.com:
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan made a flurry of announcements on the 27th regarding PS3 development. According to the company, development tools first announced at the July PlayStation Meeting will be making their way into the hands of developers shortly.
Garnering attention from gamers and developers alike are tools from Ageia, Epic and Havok. From Ageia comes the PhysX SDK physics library, not to be confused with Havok's Complete XS physics engine. Epic will, of course, be delivering the Unreal 3 complete games development framework, which continues to see new product announcements for developers of both Xbox 360 and PS3 titles. Tools from all three libraries will be available to developers starting in October.
SCE also announced today that it has, as of this month, completed acquisition of SN Systems, also promised during the PlayStation Meeting. As a result of the acquisition, SCE will distribute the SN Systems developed ProDG development tools, which provides developers with an integrated development environment to help ease the game development. ProDG tools will be available in October.
» PS1 inspiration for PS3 controller concept uncovered?
From joystiq.com:
The PS3's "different direction" for its standard controller may seem a bit strange to some--and, thankfully, still a "conceptual design" to others--but there might be an ergonomic precedent for Sony's DualShock-ing new ways: the strikingly similar (but supposedly comfortable) PS1 third-party design you see here.
Some folks may remember this from their pre-DualShock glory days (or even a post right after the pre-E3 unveiling?), but this is the first that we've seen of this digital wonder. It apparently even had a review: "Hands down the best feel of any controller out there! Coolest design, too! Super smooth directional pad and a great rubber grip makes it a breeze to use." 4-1/2 out of 5 stars.
