» (Japan) PS3 Launch: 50pct Markup for PS3s
From gamepro.com
A look at listings on Yahoo Auctions, one of Japan's top online auction sites, on Saturday night reveals that there is a profit to be made from selling the PS3. But there is also a good supply of consoles that is helping to stop prices reaching levels seen before launch or being seen currently in the U.S.
Versions of the more expensive model that has a 60 GB hard-disk drive, were selling for around 90,000JPY (US $766), which is about 50 percent higher than the retail price. The cheaper machine, which retails for about 50,000JPY, was selling for around 70,000JPY. At close to 10 p.m. there was an auction ending about once every minute on average.
» PS3 Backwards Compatibility Impressions
From kotaku.com:
I've tried three or four games on the system and all have worked fine, including SingStar using the USB microphones.
Gameplay seems pretty much unchanged. Though you're now using the PS3, rumbleless controller, to play the games. The console does give you the option of selecting digital or analog mode for the controller, which is nice. But that can't make up for how relatively cruddy the games look after playing PS3 games for the day, but that's not too surprising.
» PS3 manual details HDD, battery replacement
From joystiq.com:
We're really not sure if Sony was being serious when they said they'd be willing to replace the lithium-ion batteries in the PlayStation 3's Sixaxis controller if and when they stop holding their charge, but their "Safety and Support" manual (included in the retail box) seems to indicate otherwise. On pages 18 and 19, they detail how to remove the battery before disposing of the controller. Sure, they're not telling you it's cool to replace it yourself but follow those steps in reverse with a new battery, and you've got yourself a revitalized Sixaxis.
What they are telling you how to remove and replace is the console's hard disk. Follow a handful of instructions and you can replace that anemic 60GB drive with a whopping 200GB monster ... all without voiding that warranty!
» PS3 Music: Playback, Ripping and Music Devices
From ps3.ign.com(1) and ps3.ign.com(2):
* When you pop a CD into the PlayStation 3, it will of course wind up under the Music heading of the Cross Media Bar. After you've agreed to the privacy policy agreement for nabbing track info online, the system will name your CD and its individual tracks. Pressing Triangle, you're able to play a track, import it or view more information. By choosing Information, you'll see not only the track, album and artist info, but its genre and how large the file size will be if you import it. Import settings are located under Settings->Music Settings in the XMB, and you can choose to rip tracks as an AAC, MP3 or ATRAC file. For each of these, you have a number of bitrate options. MP3 will hit 320kbps at its highest rate.
* In our first look at the PlayStation 3's media playback features, we initially the system to be limited by its directory structure design -- unless media was stored in the proper folder, it would not be read by the PS3. But surprise! With a tap of the Triangle button, the PS3 becomes a fully-formed directory searcher, and can indeed find and play music, photos, videos or playlists from anywhere on most any media device.
» PS3 Video Playback - Open and Unrestricted
From ps3.ign.com:
Video playback on Sony's new system seems to have no restrictions of any kind. Barring a lack of support for your chosen format (which of course will never make anybody happy since there are 5 zillion media formats out there and no media player can play back everything), the PS3 will play back videos without issue, even at full HD quality.
In addition to AVC, PS3 will also be able to play MPEG1, MPEG2, and standard-profile MP4 videos, all common formats. We were able to test MPEG2 and MP4-SP, and both formats worked just as any other video format on PS3, without issue. We also loaded an AVI file into the PS3, and while it recognized that a file was loaded, it showed the AVI file as Corrupted Data, just as on PSP.
» Is history repeating itself? Convincing parallels between the PS2 and PS3
From 1up.com:
No console maker has ever dominated three consecutive platform generations. Atari squandered its head start in the 80s, Nintendo lost its near monopolistic stranglehold in the 90s, and now it's Sony's turn to pass the baton. Or is it? The PS3 may have seen its share of negative press lately, but Sony seems to be lining up a perfect repeat success of the PS2. The outlook for PS3 is actually not all that different as it was for the PS2 when it was first introduced in 2000. Don't believe us? Check out these examples of history repeating itself.
» Japan Queues Up for PS3
From next-gen.biz:
On Friday at 8 p.m. in Tokyo, gamers were already lined up to buy the PS3, which wasn't to go on sale until 7 a.m. the next morning. There were two distinct lines of people who intended to get their hands on a system: one in Ikebukuro in front of Bic Camera in the gadget district Akihabara made up of around 250 people, and one in front of Asobit City Games, consisting of less than 100.
Japan is expected to get around 80,000 units total on day one, so quantities will be initially tight in Japan, as with the rest of the world. Most major retailers will have 100 to 150 PS3s to sell, while smaller stores will get a paltry two to five units.
As for software, the latest polls from ITmedia indicate that 30 percent of the people who are going to buy a PS3 will go for Ridge Racer 7, 25 percent for Resistance: Fall of Man and 24 percent for the new Gundam title. Genji: Days of the Blade recevied only 5 percent of peoples' attention bringing up the tail-end of the poll.
» eBay 'Number 1 Console Retailer' For This Xmas?
From gamasutra.com:
As part of his predictions for the NPD U.S. video game sales charts for October, due this afternoon, analyst Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets has remarked on the emerging reseller market for the PS3 and Wii, claiming that eBay might become "the #1 new console retailer this holiday."
Already, our survey of completed auctions on ebay.com indicates that nearly 2,000 pre-ordered PS3 and Wii consoles have been resold on the marketplace to-date. In addition, the consoles are selling on eBay for approximately two and one half times the suggested retail price of console hardware, on average $1,500 for Sony's PS3 vs. $599 and $550 vs. $249 for Nintendo's Wii." Just how pathetic? Reader Adam called his local Toys "R" Us in Tokyo, which said it was only getting in 6 units, while Kotakuite Brad said the Shinjuku Bic Camera still has no idea how many consoles it is going to get and won't know more until launch.

» UK firm offers 'PlayStation 3 for Christmas'
From gamespot.com:
An advert has been put up in a central London train station boldly proclaiming "PlayStation 3--Order now for Christmas" with a phone number in red underneath beginning with the prefix 0906, the equivalent of a 1-900 in the states.
Brits desperate enough to get their hands on the next-gen console ahead of its official European release date in March will find themselves with an approximately £7.50 (around $14) phone charge for the four-and-a-half-minute call.
The voice explains that the PS3 Mastercash will be delivering will be either a Japanese or an American console, but will come with a UK power supply and all other relevant cables. This aspect of the deal seems particularly dodgy, as Sony has previously made its intentions to sue any companies "grey importing" the new PS3 console very clear indeed.
The voice adds that a caller's order is in no way binding, and that Mastercash reserves the right to cancel any or all orders "at any time it sees fit to do so." Naturally, all orders are also subject to availability.
» Neowin: Playstation 3 Shipment Reduction True?
From neowin.net:
A few days ago, an executive over at video game giant EA had gone on record saying that the number of PS3 units shipped in 2006 could be almost half of what was originally predicted. In what seems to be further fuel for the rumor fire, an anonymous employee of the electronics retailer, Best Buy, has informed Neowin that management let it slip out that Best Buy, itself, would be getting approximately half of the original number of units promised by Sony. Taking Sony's insistence of 1.2 million units by the end of 2006 and slicing that in half, we're left with only 600,000 units for the US during the more important sales time of the year.
Again, this information is not confirmed by Best Buy and is only word of mouth from someone inside the company.
» PS3 titles to use single online sign-in
From gamesindustry.biz:
Every game on the PlayStation 3 will use the same universal sign-in and the same online ID, Sony has confirmed - even titles which do not use the central buddy list and messaging systems offered by the console.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz this morning, the UK producer on launch title Resistance, Dan Brooke, said that he "wishes to be clear that Resistance uses the PlayStation online ID to sign into the game. There is no separate login for Resistance and the online ID you create will be the same you use for all titles."
The clarification comes after Ted Price, head of Resistance developer Insomniac Games, revealed last week that despite having extensive online functionality, the game will not be using the central buddy list offered by the PS3; instead, players will build an in-game buddy list unique to the game. » Play-Asia Re-Opens Pre-Orders for PS3, but not for Europe
Play-Asia cancelled their PS3 pre-orders last month after the Lik-Sang shutdown, but it looks like they re-opened pre-order today! What's more? The released the price they will be selling the Japanese PS3 for: 999usd for the 60gb version and 899usd for the 20gb version. They will of course not charge your credit card before pre-orders are being shipped. Bids usually end up higher on Ebay pre-order auctions ... so this might be a good alternative for those searching a launch PS3, although it's unknown how much stock they'll have.

» Sony Marketing Training: PS3's Cell 3x more powerful than Xbox 360 CPU

"Welcome to your PS3 Retail Online Training. We trust that you will find the following information valuable and assist you in understanding and explaining PS3 Technology to your customers and staff. ... The Cell Processor is essentially as powerful as 3 Xbox 360 CPU's or 35 PlayStation® 2 CPU's"

From ps3.ign.com:
* Ryltar X: Heat. How hot does it run, how hot are the discs upon ejection..should anyone be concerned? * IGN: It definitely heats up. The system is definitely quiet, but you can feel the system spew hot air from the vents located on its side. The back of the system gets particularly hot, with the remaining sides just getting mildly warm. Unfortunately, we can't give you an exact reading just yet - that's forthcoming.
* ArmDnrdy: Is there some kind of "sleep" mode like the PSP, where if you live a game or something running for a period of time the screen will go black. * IGN: The PS3 retail unit does have a PSP-like sleep mode, but this feature doesn't work on the debug unit. We'll let you know what happens when we score retail units next week.
* Menace2Society: I want to know whether the PS3 will upscale to all supported resolutions despite what the base resolution the various games support. like if my tv doesn't support 720p will the ps3 upscale 720p native games to 1080i? * IGN: The PS3 test unit has a "Custom Resolution" setting that allows you to tell the system what your TV's maximum resolution is. Our test unit doesn't support older games yet, so it's impossible to tell if it upscales lower resolutions to higher ones.
"But that's the price you pay for adopting brand new, leading-edge technologies that will be future proof. We will resolve those issues - we are already catching up." "We will continue to catch up on the production, and as you know, we haven't changed our full-year forecast of six million units [by March 2007], so we're only talking about a ramp-up issue. » Some interesting facts about the PS3
From engadget.com:
So here are a few interesting facts about the PlayStation 3 you may (or may not) be interested in knowing:
* After plenty of gameplay the console is cool -- or at worst warm -- to the touch on every surface. In a side by side test with the Xbox 360, the console is comparably virtually silent, and the Blu-ray drive is significantly quieter than the 360's DVD drive. * USB keyboards and mice will be plug-n-play, no fuss at all. Who really wants to browse the web with a PlayStation controller anyway? * There are currently no plans for VGA out on the PlayStation3. * There are currently no plans for a cheaper, wired version of the SIXAXIS. * Despite rumor, Sony insists the US is still officially targeted for a 400k unit launch; Japan is still set for a mere 80k. Sony execs are actually expecting an upturn in unit production before launch, so those numbers may actually go up. * Some titles have an option to install some amount of game data (in addition to saved data) to the drive. Genji can install 4GB worth of data to decrease load times (quoted to drop from 12-15 seconds down to 3-4); this game data can be removed at any time without affecting your saved games. * The drive can be upgraded, although not on any official basis (read: YMMV, do so at your own risk, you may void warranty, etc.).
